In the late 1920s, Mary Sully (Yankton Dakota, 1896–1963) began a series of imaginative portraits she called “personality prints.” Each colorful portrait is characterized by abstract motifs and sophisticated patterning in which Sully fused her fascinations with popular culture, and her knowledge of Native American and modern art forms. Though her work was largely unrecognized during her lifetime, Sully's drawings—134 triptychs created over a decade—are now celebrated as a monumental achievement.
This boxed set of 12 notecards includes details from four of her extraordinary artworks.
